From National Forest Week in Canada to COP30 in Brazil!
Last week (September 21-27), Canadians celebrated National Forest Week. Each year the Canadian Institute of Forestry adopts a theme for the week. This year’s theme was Roots of Resilience: From Seed to Canopy.
We would like to use this opportunity to reflect on the history of the IMFN – not where we have come from, but what we have become, together.

Our network is rooted in the idea of resiliency. Since the IMFN was announced at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, our Network has grown from the seeds of several sites across Canada to a canopy of over 60 Model Forests in more than 30 countries. This includes five Model Forests in Brazil, which have recently formed a National Model Forest Network, in Brazil.
This important watershed moment means we share a birthday with the three Rio Conventions as they are known – on Biodiversity, Desertification and Climate Change – which were born out of Rio in 1992. In their own words, “The three conventions are intrinsically linked, operating in the same ecosystems and addressing interdependent issues.” The IMFN is also intrinsically linked across ecosystems. Model Forests promote the idea of forming partnerships under a neutral forum where a range of values and interests can be represented, and where partners can experiment with new ideas under a common goal of sustainable development.
As we celebrate National Forest Week here in Canada, we look to the achievements of the Model Forests and partner organizations across the globe as we continue on the road to Belém and beyond.
