The Department of Forest Resource Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå recently received a major European Union grant (EU Interreg Baltic Sea Region) for further development of the Model Forest concept in northern Europe. The Baltic Landscape Project 2012-2014, named “Baltic landscape in change – Innovative approaches toward sustainable forest landscapes,” involves Sweden, Finland, Poland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Norway. Russian Model Forests (Komi, Pskov and Kovdozersky) will also be involved in cooperating and sharing knowledge with the project. The Project has four main components: 1) establishment of additional Model Forests in Finland, Poland and Sweden – in total seven sites are included; 2) integrated landscape planning; 3) balancing interests on the landscape; and 4) catchment-based governance and management. The main objective is to foster good governance in forest landscapes through the creation of a network of landscape case studies for advancing, implementing and disseminating good practices in landscape use and management.
